Corn planting creeping northward
The USDA’s latest Crop Progress Report indicates that nearly two-thirds of the top 18 corn producing states have yet to plant their crops or are behind when compared to last year.
Nationally, seven percent of the nation’s corn has been planted. This is 9 percent below 2010 (16 percent) and one-percent lower than the five-year average. Missouri (26 percent), North Carolina (34), Tennessee (20) and Texas (57) reported the highest percentage of planted corn. North Carolina and Tennessee are 25 percent and 23 percent behind last year – the greatest difference reported.
Corn planting has yet to begin in Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania and South Dakota.
Illinois, Kansas, and Missouri each reported higher percentages than their state’s five-year average. Of the top producing states, more than half fall below the national five-year average.
