US corn exports being redirected in Japan
American stockfeed lobby group, the US Grains Council, says millions of tonnes of corn heading to Japan may have to be redirected.
Fifteen million tonnes of corn are sent to Japan per year, and shipments had been heading to damaged ports in devastated regions.
US Grain Council's Erick Erickson says it's still hard to find out what's going on, nearly two weeks since the earthquake and tsunami.
"We're very active in Japan because it is the number one importer of US corn," he said.
"We're trying to follow the situation which is still largely uncertain and a lot of things are unknown.
"We're aware of a number of shiploads of corn on the high seas destined for Japan are being redirected away from ports that were damaged."
